Debenhams is the chain of UK based general stores, has been existing since 1778. It is spreading in over 170 locations in UK, Ireland and Denmark. Listed on the London Stock Exchange, Debenhams is the component of FTSE 250 Index. The company has over 29,000 employees and has headquarters at London, England. Debenhams dates back to 1778 when it was founded by William Clark in London as a drapers store for selling the fabrics, gloves, parasols and bonnets. In 1813, the store was renamed as Clark and Debenham after William Debenham joined William Clark. The debut store under Clark and Debenham was opened at Cheltenham and known as the seller of mourning clothes prepared in Victoria fashion. In 1851, the store name was changed to Debenham & Freebody, resulted from the joining of Clement Freebody as a partner. It business was also changed and the store started selling cloth and supplying materials to tailors. The business soon grew outside the UK with the presence in nations like China, Canada, Australia and South Africa. It also involved in many aquisitions of various retail and wholesale stores contributed to the expansion of the firm.
After being incorporated as Debenhams Ltd in 1905, the business purchased Marshall and Snellgrove followed by the acquisition of Kinghtsbridge. In 1928, it went public and traded on London Stock Exchange. In 1950's, Debenhams emerged as the largest departmental store in the UK with the ownership of 80 companies and has the network of 110 stores. Its central buying system was started in 1966. Burton Group was the new owner of the company in 1985 and company introuduced new merchndises, notable among them is Designers at Debenhams in 1993. Debenhams launched its franchise store in Bahrain in 1997 before being acquired by Baroness Retail Ltd in 2006. It purchased nine stores from Roches in Ireland in 2007 and took over Magasin DU Nord store chain in Denmark.
