After building headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1909, Penney had established over 30 stores by 1912. In 1913, its chain of stores were branded as JC Penney Company. The headquarters was relocated to New York City and by 1917, JC Penney was the chain of 175 stores locating in 22 states in the USA. The company had its 500th store opened in Hamilton, Missouri while the 1000th store was started in 1928. J.C. Penney credit cards were launched in 1959.
J.C. Penney had been in successful phase during 1960's and 1970s. For the first time, J.C. Penney's Revenue touch the $5 billion mark in 1971 and by 1973 it is the owner of over 2050 stores throughout the country. In 1980's, the company ventured into online retailing through Viewtron and later on it launched its website in 1998. In 1987, the company was relocated to Dallas, Texas and launched its shopping TV channel in 1989. Once again its headquarters was moved to Plano, Texas from Dallas in 1990. JC Penney acquired various drug stores like Fay's Drug, Kerr Drug and Thrift and were brought under one brand, Eckerd in 1997. The company closed many of its stores by 2014.
