The company is one of the major electricity distribution companies in the state serving almost every city, town, and communities within the territory of 23 counties of southeast Mississippi. The company operates as a subsidiary of Atlanta based Southern Company that is also an American electric utility and one of the largest electric utilities in the country and the world.
Mississippi Power was established back in the year 1923 and after two years of its establishment its parent company i.e. Southern Company was formed in the year 1925 as a holding company for Mississippi Power and other electric utilities. The company has used the name of Mississippi Power Company(MPC) from 1925 to 1976 and after that it changed it to only Mississippi Power. For generation of electricity the company owns number of power generation plants whether steam plants and combustion turbines. Some of the power plants are namely Lonnie P. Sweatt Electric Generating Plant, A.J. Watson Electric Generating Plant, Greene County Electric Generating Plant, Victor J. Daniel Electric Generating Plant, Lonnie P. Sweatt Electric Generating Plant, Chevron Cogenerating Plant, Plant Watson. These power plants run on mainly two types of fuels which are coal and natural gas. The combined capacity of these is nearly 3,098,692 kW.
For transmission of the electricity generated through power plants the company owns a large network of transmission lines for power distribution.
