Tricare is the name of a health care program that was run by Tricare Management Activity (TMA) under the United States Department of Defense Military Health System for the benefit of defense personnel. The program was previously known with the name of Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS). Tricare Management Activity (TMA) is the part of the Military Health System which takes care of the persons which are engaged in US military active duty. The people covered under the program are defense personnel whether presently serving or retired, dependents of defense personnel and members of reserve component. In the year 2013, Tricare Management Activity (TMA) was closed down and its operations were transfered to some another agency named Defense Health Agency (DHA) which was established on the same day on which TMA shut down its operations. Previously the health care facilities to the defense personnels were provided only in military medical institutions but with the passage of time the strength of defense personnel increased but the strength of these institutions were not increased and there was a scarcity of resources at these institutions. To overcome this the Congress passed two medical acts namely the Dependents Medical Care Act of 1956 and the Military Medical Benefits Amendments of 1966 which led to the start of CHAMPUS. The Tricare program is further having different options for a person to choose from which are namely Tricare Standard, Tricare Prime, Tricare Reserve Select (TRS), Tricare for Life (TFL), Tricare Extra, US Family Health Plan, Tricare Reserve Retired (TRR) and others etc.
